The Aussie Youth Double Cheese and Bacon Burger

My mate Tim has been doing a lot of burger testing with this blog in mind. Actually, probably not with this blog in mind, he just loves burgers. But I think he revels in the excuse to eat burgers while helping out a mate. He was telling me about a lunch he’d had at the Australian Youth Hotel in Glebe. It was a cold and rainy day and he managed to snaffle a seat right by the open fire. A schooner of Vale’s Dark Lager, a burger and he was a happy man. Now Tim’s a pretty good story teller so by the time he’d finished this little tale, we were making tracks for the Aussie Youth. Not quite sure if it was his suggestion or mine but it was a win for everyone involved.

The Australian Youth Hotel sits in the shadows of the Sydney CBD between Glebe and Ultimo and it’s a great escape from the noise of Broadway. They’ve got an open fire and a heated courtyard, great beers on tap and some pretty amazing food. On the decor front, they’ve stuck to their Irish roots without being naff.

Now there’s not a lot of places in Sydney who are gutsy enough to serve a double beef patty burger but I’m glad the Aussie Youth have gone with it. The meat is seasoned nicely with a good mix of spices. While each patty is pretty sizeable, it’s not too much to wrap your laughing gear around, thanks mainly to the soft buns which are easily squashed down. The patties were cooked to perfection, juicy and medium rare, just the way a burger should be. It’s served with melted cheese, crispy bacon, tomato, cos lettuce, beetroot, mustard mayo and a bowl of thick cut potato chips. The chips were amazing, just like the ones you used to get from the local milk bar as a kid, all wrapped up in butcher’s paper for a couple of dollars. All this for 17 bucks. I’m lead to believe, though that they do a single burger as a lunch special for $10.

The Vale Dark Lager is everything you’d want in a beer in winter. It’s got just the right amount of complexity to sit and mull over all night without being too strong and it went perfectly with the bacon double cheese burger.

What more is there to say? Go there and eat burgers, lots of them. 63 Bay St, Glebe. Thanks for the recon Tim!

    • Sold. When I’ve finished my pork tour of Germany I’ll begin my burger tour of Sydney. Aussie Youth Hotel, Four IN Hand and Rockpool Bar and Grill high on the agenda!

      • Hey Mark, I was wondering if you were in Germany. Those girls did us proud, played like troopers. The Four in Hand is great, I’ve had their degustation, it was awesome. Haven’t had their burger yet.

    • Hey Andrea, I think you’d be surprised, it really did squash down well. I think the photo makes them look huge but they’re not ridiculously large.
